What is well-being?

*Well-being *is the experience of health and happiness. It includes mental and physical health, physical and emotional safety, and a feeling of belonging, sense of purpose, achievement and success and a feeling of belonging, sense of purpose, achievement and success.

Well-being is a broad concept and covers a range of psychological and physical abilities. Five major types of well-being are said to be:

Emotional well-being :   The ability to be resilient, manage one’s emotions and generate emotions that lead to good feelings. 

Physical well-beingThe ability to improve the functioning of one’s body through healthy eating and good exercise habits. 

Workplace well-being :The ability to pursue one’s own interests, beliefs and values in order to gain meaning and happiness in life and professional enrichment. 

Societal well-beingThe ability to participate in an active community or culture.

Social well-being – the ability to communicate, develop meaningful relationships with others and create one’s own emotional support network

Taking care of yourself & Prioritize your mental health

Remember that it's okay to ask for help and prioritize your mental health. Taking care of yourself can have a positive impact on all aspects of your life.

If you are struggling with mental health, consider reaching out to a mental health professional who can provide guidance, support, and therapy.

2. Practice self-care: 

Take time to prioritize self-care activities that promote *mental well-being*, such as exercise, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities you enjoy.

Why is mental health important for overall health?

For example, depression increases the risk for many types of physical health problems, particularly long-lasting conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. It is important to prioritize *mental health and well-being* and take proactive steps to maintain and improve them. It is not just about the absence of mental health problems, but also about actively nurturing positive mental well-being.

 SIGNS OF MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

Here are some general signs of mental health problems:

1. Persistent sadness or changes in mood: 

Feeling sad, hopeless, or excessively irritable for an extended period of time can be a sign of depression or other mood disorders.

2. Changes in appetite or weight: 

Significant changes in appetite, weight loss or gain, or disordered eating patterns can be indicators of eating disorders or other mental health conditions.

3. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions: 

Mental health problems can affect cognitive function and lead to difficulty focusing, making decisions, or experiencing memory problems. 

4. Withdrawal from social activities: 

Losing interest in previously enjoyed activities, isolating oneself, or withdrawing from social interactions can be a sign of depression or other mental health disorders.

5. Sleep disturbances: 

Changes in sleep patterns, such as insomnia or oversleeping, can be associated with various mental health conditions.

6. Intense anxiety or worry:

The Quran Recognizes the Reality of Depression

In Islamic teachings, there are several Quranic Verses for Relief from Mental Stress and Anxiety.
The Quran often tells us that if we remain firm, there is no pain or dread, and that the Hereafter is devoid of all bad and overpowering feelings and situations  (Quran 43:68, 46:13). The Quran recognizes the truth of these feelings, and so the existence of depression.


Verse 1: Belief and perseverance
“So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.” [3:139]. 

The early Muslims were depressed and sad. This verse came down as a comfort, advising people not to be dejected or to focus on things that could not be altered in the past. It redirects their attention, stressing that they will overcome their seemingly hopeless condition by remaining faithful to Allah. Persisting in these traits would lead to their success, and this proved to be true in the end. This teaches the significance of faith and endurance. This proverb explains that failures happen, that wallowing in emotion is inevitable, but that even after failure or the most dismal of circumstances, one may rise again.

Verse 2: Solace in Allah’s Presence
“And let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, honor [due to power] belongs to Allah entirely. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.” [10:65]. 



Verse 3: A Positive Outcome
“And they will say, “Praise to Allah, who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative.” [35:34]. 

The fact of our life is that no one can escape feelings of concern, anxiety, or grief. The text above refers to all feelings of anxiety and discomfort as sadness. The verse also alluded to the grief and anxiety that will be felt on the Day of Judgement and one’s destiny in the Hereafter. The people are depicted as joyful in the passage because they have been forgiven for their mistakes and Allah has recognized their efforts. It is claimed that Allah would relieve the inhabitants of paradise of all their worries and sorrows. This may be viewed as both incentive and consolation—inspiration to continue improving and solace that any miseries of this life would not follow into the next.
